Dear American Apparel,
Nowadays people are really into style and how they look, I have shopped at American Apparel a couple if times and your clothes are beautiful, controversial, unique, has good quality, and most importantly it is U.S. made and sweatshop free.
However, I have heard that there is an appearance policy for workers, which means workers have to have a particular style or have to look a certain way for them to be hired. Workers would have to send in a body shot picture to a particular email, and the new policy reportedly says that in order for workers to receive a promotion or raise, their photo must be approved. IT doesn't matter if they do their job correctly, it only matters if they look good and if they have a good enough style to work for your company. Abercrombie & Fitch got sued for not hiring people with head scarves, "Trendy clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has agreed to make religious accommodations to its policy governing employees' appearance as part of a settlement of discrimination lawsuits filed in California." They were filed by two Muslim women that claimed that the company discriminated against them just because they wore head scarves. This is one example of a company that has changed their appearance policies. People feel hurt and mistreated when someone gets fired or doesn't get hired at all because of their style or the way they look, not everyone likes to get judged by their cover.
Yes, I understand that you are trying to attract customers to your store and don't want the employees to scare customers away, but firing the "uglies" isn't the greatest solution, maybe you could start hiring people that actually want this job or extremely need it because our economy isn't in good health; not many people can get jobs now and someone would be lucky if they could at least work in a clothing store.
Not many people know about this policy at your store but if they did, they would feel the same way.Your store is still has amazing clothing, polite workers, and it is still an awesome store, but if you could, just consider this.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Quiocho
Very good start! Your argument is reasonable and something to be taken into consideration. You do need to add stronger facts to support your opinions, meaning find out and include what their hiring policy is, maybe find some facts or quotes that have people from the clothing company actually saying they hire based off of looks. Also you need to add facts on what hiring only a certain people can maybe detract the number of customers. MS(3)
